'Nandanam' - borrowed from nature!
Our clients, Dr Nandakumar & Adv Shancy - both of them busy professionals, wanted a tropical yet modern home with lot of fresh air, natural light & openness without compromising on privacy.
The plot is located in a semi-urban residential area surrounded by mid size settlements on all four sides. It just had a 14 ft. wide vehicular entry on the south western corner. The basic idea was to leave out the south west quarter to create an open scape in an otherwise crowded environment.
Simply put, 'Nandanam' is an L-shaped structure with private zone in longer leg & public area in shoter one with a courtyard in between.
All living spaces here opens out to this extenal courtyard which inturn acts as a buffer between formal & informal blocks.
Terrace here is covered with clay roof tiles on top & terracotta louver jali on sides & hence modified to become a well lit & ventilated multi-purpose hall. It functions as a gym+pool+tv watching space on a daily basis or as a party space with pool deck occasionally
'Nandanam' is architecturally a fusion of contemporary planning & tropical features with a tinge of traditional elements.
Wood, exposed brick walls, cement finish slabs, louver terracotta jali, natural stone floors & river bed pebbles along with mangalore tile roof gives it an earthy character.
