The whole concept evolved around a natural dip at the south west quarter of the site, most of which was filled up with water at the time of initial site visit…..This site was rich in contours but for a cashew shaped region at the highest level overlooking the slump on both sides was surprisingly even!
Western half of the plot matched cardinal directions and we played along... Trapping the south west monsoon winds... Giving provisions for hot air run-off… Offering due respect to north lighting especially for kitchen and work areas.
The entry to sit out, foyer and the pool yard were given on the east west axis….. The poomugham
With long charupadi overlooked their rubber estate, entry and the access road on the east.
A very simple roof system with large overhangs at the slab level was adopted thus omitting sunshades at lintel level… The level differences, large span corner windows and the dynamic profile made otherwise a very simple roof form look quite interesting & unique
Colours from the surroundings were given to subdue the curious form….. Grooves were given to define openings , break the mass and to prevent plastering cracks…A column at the junction of Living and Dining was special….. Beams resting on it from unusual angles….. We gave it a vibrant yellow colour and took it through all the ties above the terrace to give it a pivotal effect…..
A study space was given extending the stair landing which in turn overlooked the double height family living space.
We had similar notions as far as views from the guest spaces were concerned….. Giving a framed view to the pool for those who open the main door was a surprise element for sure!
They wanted to club together kitchen with living spaces, away from the pool - primarily to make kitchen alive. It was then that we thought about making a part of the dining into a sky-lit informally seated BAR to add interest
